I've put together three weeks of good training, almost every day a significant improvement on the previous day. Things have been good. Then I made the mistake of wondering what my fitness level is in real terms and I came up with my being able to run a 5K in just under 20 minutes. Excepting difficult trail 5K's and one "5K" that was really 4 miles, that'd be a personal worst.
I thought wistfully of the last time I ran a sub-17, more than a decade ago. I'm a full minute per mile behind that now and there's guys my age running sub-16. [Sigh.]
Then I thought about where I was three weeks ago. Crunching the numbers, I was probably able to run a 5K in 23. 20 is half-way between 23 and 17, so... I'm half-way there already!
Hmmm. Maybe I need mood stabilizers.

My favorite race from yesterday (I still think Wurth-Thomas could've won it):

i *just* caught the women's 1500 m. had no idea the trials were on and turned on the tv randomly LITERALLY as the women were lining up for the 1500 m. i was sure wurth-thomas had it locked up (i had seen her race earlier this season on the diamond league and based on that, going out in 62, 2:08 did not seem too aggressive). anyway with 200 m to go i got an urgent call to go help out with the toddler in the bathroom. argh! torture. i hung on. with 100 m to go the call become urgent and irritated so i missed the finish but i gather she missed making the team. still, wow, what a gutsy run! refusing to run a slow championship final. that's gutsy in my book. gotta love the fact that she was faster than the men through 800 m (4 seconds faster) and possibly through 1000 m also.
I thought Elation to Dejection to Hope was going to be the Twins' Double-play Combo - your own Tinkers to Evers to Chance.
@PPC: Looking at the race again, the winning time works out to 65 seconds per lap. Uceny ran 65, 65, 67... so she ran a much better race than Wurth-Thomas; it only looked like a slow start and sprint because of the comparison to Wurth-Thomas.
