Steve Gets Invited to a Bad Party

I got an e-vite; my book club is meeting on Halloween and everyone has been asked to "dress as the author of a book you've read in the past year." That's lame on oh so many levels, but it's the only invitation I've received so far.

First, I think I'm the only member of the group who hasn't had a book published, so everyone's probably going to come as themselves.

Second, though I have about 100 choices, there's not many I could pull off. If I chose a female author, I'd be spending the evening being told "I didn't know Alan Moore (image) was a cross-dresser!" Most authors aren't very distinctive in appearance. I couldn't manage Tom Wolfe (image); the best book I read in the past year was "The Collected Poems of Weldon Kees" (thanks again, PiccolaPineCone!), but his is a look I'd rather not try (image). A bottle of bleach and a fat suit and maybe I could be Bill Holm (image).

So, I went through the list of books I've read and I found a winner - easy to do given my looks, easy to identify and the author of a very good book I have read in the past year. Take a guess, then see if you're right. [image: book I read this year]

I stand by my assessment of La Russa as a no-class crybaby. I don't follow the Cards, so I don't see him that often, but every time I do, he's crying about something. When Pujols wasn't hitting at the beginning of the year and the Cardinals got off to a bad start, I'm not sure how La Russa's whining at the reporters about how their questions were unfair - to him - "helped his team". Also not sure how his public bad-mouthing of Ryan Howard a few years ago when the Phillies extended RH's contract "helped his team" but, yeah, the fact that it was no help didn't stop him from doing it.

The guy just cries and cries. Take some blame every once in awhile, Tony! Sometimes? the reason you lost is ... cos you suck. And Tony? You do suck!

No class, as I said.

I think you're going as the author of Where's Waldo?

@GQH: Mark Handford? I could do that.

I thought of going as the author of "Primary Colors," but he's no longer listed as Anonymous. I also thought of going as Pynchon and either not showing up or not talking to anyone.

With Pynchon, you just follow the Simpsons' lead, thus

Awesome that you had a chance to read the letters! It took me a few years to get through the 3 volumes. When I finished, the beginning letters were so far past that I started a second reading. When I finished the second time, 6 years had passed since the intial reading and I had changed as a person, so I read them yet again. When I finished the third reading I was satisfied and felt a letter or two a day was a good way to color a decade of my life.

I'll have to mention your costume to Rasmus as an idea since, according to you, he wouldn't even have to dress up. I love the picture on the top of the blog. I looked at it and immediately thought - "that's Voyageur" or am I wrong?

I hope your anger-fueled hiatus has nothing to do with my showing you what a dick Tony La Russa is.

Don't despair. There are other heroes out there for you to emulate. Might I suggest Charlie Manuel?

Feel better.

@SeaLegsGirl(ahem, Tracizzle): SR only looks like him in that one photo. And yes, that pic's from Voyageur.
