Fave Songs of 2010

Yes, these were my choices in the Current's Top 89 countdown. "Dog Days" by Florence and the Machine would've been on the list, but it showed up on Saturday Night Live... and Letterman... and Glee... and Eat, Pray Love... [and I seem to be the only one who thought The Arcade Fire's latest album was disappointing].

Glaven? Are you okay?

Being a geezer, I know none of these except "Fuck You", which I also liked.

Being at work, I can't listen to them.

When Cee Lo did "Fuck You" on Teh Colbert Report, he sang the first chorus with new lyrics and the refrain "Fox News", which is essentially the same as "Fuck You" to accuracy.

@slg - yeah, I'm fine. You just barely beat me. I'm glad you realize that the first place to look for my body, should you suspect something happened to me, is here at SQ's blog.

It's where geezers go to die

Yeah, anyway - this is so fun! Thanks for 3 new songs.

And YES, Famine Affair is AWESOME. What a bridge! I get so giddy when he gets to the bridge. And it turns out it IS a great running song - at least for the tempo I'm running these days.

BUT, I do think Arcade Fire's album was the best album of the year and I'm sticking to it. The reason I know it's good is it took me about 2 months before I realized how truly good it is.

That aside, I highly approve of six or your choices (again, don't know 3), but can't quite get into Fuck You.

@Glaven - while I am relieved you are alive, I am grateful I don't have to sit in a car with you and fight over music.

Re: Epic and Fail ...

The Big Word last year amongst Ian and his friends seemed to be "random". Fittingly, they use it quite randomly.

I have had enough of it already.

Great list. I would add "Tightrope" by Janelle Monae, "Goddess on the Prairie" by Hot Hot Heat, and "My Gap Feels Weird" by Superchunk, and maybe subtract the Frighten Rabbit song. They are just too twee for my taste.

Also, you can count me with the masses that were not disappointed by the Arcade Fire album.

I was thinking "woo-hoo! 7 comments!" and then I find out it's just SLG and GQH and they're not always even on topic.

You know, the bridge on "F You" is the weak point of that one, losing me on the crying "why?why?I love you!" but it leads to the last chorus in a great way - is there a key change? - and I end up forgiving it that fault.

Ross: I'm not sure I know the Superchunk song - I'll have to look it up. The Frightened Rabbit song has me going back and forth, bt I keep thinking about it.

I loved the previous Arcade Fire album (the phrase "working for the church while your family dies" haunts me) and the new one seemed a let-down, perhaps because I was hoping for more of the same and they went a different direction. I seem to be in a minority.

I guess I should also point out that the songs have running without coming back and swimming until you can't see land, tortured relationships and loss and the only song with a happy relationship (January Wedding) has them surrounded by darkness and pain. Says a lot about my year!
