Overlooked Obit

From Ed McMahon to Farrah Fawcett to Michael Jackson to (today) pitchman Billy Mays, we've been inundated with obituaries. Overlooked in these is Sky Saxon, lead singer of the Seeds, whose biggest hits were "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" and "Pushin' Too Hard."

For those who don't recall:

It has been a rough week for the families (and fans) of these folks. And, if you are not a celebrity watcher - it is hard to keep up with the other world happenings as the news organizations seem to be focused on retrospectives.

Ah well.

Thanks for pointing out some of the other folks that have died this week.

Umm... I think I should point out that the Seeds are NOT my (or anyone's) idea of a good band. They're just loveably awful. I wonder if Sky intentionally wanted people to know he was lip-synching, if he was high at the time, or if that was just one more thing he couldn't do well.

When's Glaven coming back from vacation? He'd know.

I am sure someone was a fan - so it was a rough week for someone!

Me - tired of Michael Jackson coverage, and oblivious to everything else as I rarely watch the news and get most of what news I do catch off of the BBC or MPR (maybe MinnPost on rare occasions) and, oh yeah - your blog!

No, I hadn't even known about Sky Saxon's death till this post, that's how off the grid I was.

I love these old sixties lip-syncing clips because there's absolutely NO attempt by the bands or the show's producers to make it look as though the band is actually performing live. Milli Vanilli these guys were not.

Not only do Saxon's lips not match the sound of his voice in "You're Pushing Too Hard" (which, of the two clips, is the one he's doing a better lip-syncing job in), but take a look at his left hand whenever they show it close up - he's getting nowhere near the E string on the bass, much less any of the higher strings. And NONE of the (allegedly electrified) instruments has a wire lead coming from it. Plus there are no mics, so presumably Casey Kasem had wireless mics on Shebang in, what, 1965?

Hahahahaha! Gotta love it! And this was typical of those shows.

What would a band's motivation to try to make it seem real even be? If Sky wasn't high, he sure should have been!

I don't think I even have a copy of "You're Pushing Too Hard" anymore. I'll have to remedy that now...

BLAAARRRGH!

And of course by "left hand", I meant "right hand".

As a former humanities major, I am incapable of such advanced scientific techniques as long division and the like, but usually I can tell up from down and left from right.

But not last night.

How did I miss that there were no cords?!

I had to stop trying to learn guitar because I kept giggling everytime I touched a G-string.

This has felt like a really busy and unusual week for celebrity deaths. Fred Travalena, too!
