I ran up and down the Mounds hill in St. Paul yesterday (1.25 miles long, 200 feet elevation), testing out a new heart rate monitor and a plan for pacing by heart rate for Lean Horse. I should finish that next 100 in 21 hours, which fits nicely with what others have done there (Storkamp in 18, Sigurdur in 20.5, Holtz in 24). The 30 hour cut-off is so lenient, I'm looking past it to Superior, which has a 38 hour cut-off; if I don't run it like last year - i.e. much more vertical, and running each section only once - that suddenly seems like a generous cut-off as well. Afton and Voyageur are no problems, unless it rains at Voyageur or the temp hits 100. That leaves the Glacial 50 Mile and Wild Duluth 100K as the big obstacles. And I have months to go before worrying about them.

Saturday, instead of going up to watch Grandma's Marathon, I'm going to be attempting a hill workout. Last year, I decided 30 times up the Brickyard hill (0.4 miles long, 240 feet elevation) in 7 hours would guarantee a finish at Superior. I don't recall exactly how I came up with that, but there are only so many days I can attempt it this year and I'd like to get it out of the way. Wish me luck... it was there that I broke my finger last August.

Pfffttt! Processed running content! (I can tell the difference.)

Good luck with Brickyard Hill.

I never know with you Ultra dudes whether "good luck" means "DON'T break any fingers this time" or "Hope you break five times as many!"

I'm assuming the former. But what do I know?

Have a great time... Did you see Westy coined a new phrase in his last post. WWSD... What Would Steve Do... Stay healthy!

Good luck on Saturday and I hope you don't break anything. I'm sure the workout will guarantee a fantatstic race result. Do you like the heart rate monitor? I love running with mine as long as I keep myself from getting obsessed with it.

Good luck with the hill repeats, and please don't fall and break yourself.
21 hours at Lean Horse - I think you can do it!

Oh great. NOW what am I going to look forward to at Grandma's?
Stop being so selfish.
This is definitely Processed content. Gross.
