But, alas, I just can't stay with any sort of plan, or even wear a watch for that matter. It's like I have running ADD.

I end up just running willy nilly and hoping that I'm doing enough of something that I end up with okay results. I'd be a horrible scientist :).

I truly admire people who can be so focused.Carilynhttp://www.carilynjohnson.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2796785757974247915.post-43685692151902505262013-03-04T20:49:52.845-06:002013-03-04T20:49:52.845-06:00Wow! I would like to add a point, feel free to ignore it, but I was out walking the other day and your workouts popped into my head - the quality and consistency is incredible, but knowing your age and injury history, it made perfect sense to me for you to cut back drastically for a week or two. You won't lose much fitness-wise, but the break would allow your body to recover from the constant strain, and when you come back to the training you will be fresh and looking forward to it.

Whatever you do, I think you are going to have a great running season - good luck!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2796785757974247915.post-16027066815558861272013-03-04T14:29:07.397-06:002013-03-04T14:29:07.397-06:00Confidence is a huge factor in success. I have found that the older I get, the less my old training habits tend to work for me. I've had modify a lot of the workouts or try other strategies. I am still very much on the learning curve, so what you've laid out here has given me a few ideas and also validates some of my thinking, about doing harder paces in longer runs. I'm also doing a lot more strides and fewer hills lately, but then, I race mostly on the flats, roads, and sometimes tracks.
Also, it helps me psychologically to coach myself through the tough moments, knowing I have a reward (a day off) and can then concentrate on giving my best effort on my running days.
Letting go of the times when you don't run up to your expectations is important in avoiding injury, too. You really can't "make up" for it, and less so the older you get.
Good luck and I'll look forward to hearing the debriefing after the race.
