I had to let you know about this absolutely PERFECT example of what I was talking about re: wingnuts and food recommendations.

See, Michelle Obama was behind MyPlate (proof? who needs proof when you got a blog and a "patriotic duty to exercise [my] First Amendment rights!") and her REAL agenda in using a pie chart (even though it is not a pie, but a plate, but whatever; facts and utter fantasy are fungible if you're a wingnut), is to make veiled reference to her threat to re-divide America's Pie, i.e., Redistribute the Wealth of Our Galtian Overlords!

So MyPlate is yet another Socialist Plot by the Manchurian Candidate Obamas.

Thanks for promoting their Communist agenda, SteveQ.

Why do you hate America?

I for one will keep purity of essence by not introducing these MyPlate foreign substances into my Precious Bodily Fluids!Glaven Q. It really reminds me of the dietary guideline chart here in the Netherlands, although here the dairy is grouped with meat. I find it strange that the Dutch, who are obsessed with dairy, don't have a separate section on the plate for dairy but the Americans do.
The MyPlate recommendation don't look at all bad, and I would echo the advice you give at the end of your post: real food, not too much, get moving.Dianahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14137207492303218465noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2796785757974247915.post-34815150465184949872011-06-06T21:46:31.121-05:002011-06-06T21:46:31.121-05:00Funny, I have been using a similar graphic to teac...Funny, I have been using a similar graphic to teach nutrition to patients for years (courtesy of a Texas government website for diabetics).

I adjust for those who are are lactose intolerant/vegetarian, etc but for the majority of my patients affording food is the biggest issue.

The newly designed website has some great tip sheets with good information which builds on the plate concept.

Your summary is really what it is all about. Eat food as close to it's natural state. The blog this blog pointed to didn't care for the new format and one of the things they made a big deal about was protein as a food group. In fact, the whole post seemed to me a transparent attempt to read the new guidelines in the most mean-spirited and reductivist way. I came away thinking the MyPlate idea not so bad and the blogger himself a bit of a self-important asshole.

I am aware that foax don't really need dairy (however you want to define "need") and that the only reason that group remains part of the MyPlate and was a perennial part of the Pyramid is that there was a relentless campaign by the dairy lobby and there would have been hell to pay if dairy were ever entirely excluded. (The new MyPlate at least recommends low- or non-fat dairy.)

Lobbying of a Federal Government Agency! Imagine that! This must be the first time EVER!

I still think any effort by government agencies to encourage people to eat more healthily should be applauded.

Instead, these efforts get pecked to death by various braces of ducks with absurd political axes to grind (which is not a mixed metaphor because here in Joisey murderous braces of axe-carrying ducks DO wander parks looking for unsuspecting lone Nature Lovers to disembowel).

It's crazy. McDonald's right to peddle heart attacks on a bun is sacrosanct ... but the government that tries to encourage people not to succumb to the siren call of fatty fast food is, to the wingnut right, tyrannical and, to the fringe left, nothing but a corporate shill.

Don't get me wrong - I think the federal govt is often little more than A Giant Corporate Shill. But in the case of the Food Pyramid and MyPlate?

Come on!

I think there's a genuine effort to be helpful, there. I am in favor of it.Glaven Q.
